At Okabena, Gary created the Okabena Red Partnership focused on small and micro cap growth stocks and the early identification of companies that had not yet been discovered by more conventional growth managers. In 2001, Gary launched a private partnership with Andrew Redleaf focused on capturing value in deeply distressed or grossly undervalued micro-cap public companies. The success of this partnership helped inspire the launch of Whitebox’s Small Cap Long Short Equity Fund. Gary earned his BA from the University of Minnesota, where he majored in Psychology. He completed his MBA at Cornell University’s Johnson School with concentrations in both Marketing and Finance. While at the Johnson School, Gary studied under Richard Thaler, a pioneer in behavioral economics. Jason
